Chattanooga's Seniors Claim Silver in National Senior Olympics

More than 400 adults ages 50 and older competed in the annual Senior Olympics in May, a record turnout for competitors according to officials at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors.

Winners of those athletic competitions advance to the state competition this summer with the exception of ballroom dancing, which is considered an exhibition. [Click here to read more.]

Since I turn 50 years old in September, I figured what better way to celebrate – or at least pretend I am not getting older – than to participate in the Senior Olympics.

Although I am a little heavier than in my youth – aided in part by recently learning how to make homemade biscuits – I have maintained a regular jogging regimen since college and have run in several 5K races a year strictly for fun. [Click here to read more.]

Estel Lewis, mother of five Senior Olympics athletes, made a grand entrance Monday morning into the First Tennessee Pavilion being pushed in a wheelchair by her daughter Robert Ann Lewis and torch relay participant Al Upton.

The Chattanooga District Senior Olympics kicked off Monday with a torch relay that started outside the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors building on 10th Street. [Click here to read more.]

Come next week, 67-year-old Raymond Kile will compete in softball, basketball, the softball throw, javelin, shot put and discus at the Chattanooga District Senior Olympics.

“I’m supposed to run the 100 meters, too,” Kile said Tuesday evening. “But I tweaked my hamstring playing softball tonight, so I might be out of that one.”  [Click here to read more.]

Joe Downs can cut a rug.

The retired IBM worker began ballroom dance classes in high school. Today, the suave 80-year-old still has the moves.

Mr. Downs, along with fellow members from his weekly ballroom dancing class at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors, will showcase his talent tonight at The Ginny Power Ball at The Mill on the Southside. [Click here to read more]

One of the city’s oldest volunteer orchestras will present a free community concert Sunday afternoon at Ridgedale Baptist Church, 1831 Hickory Valley Road.

The 55 musicians in the Senior Neighbors Orchestra meet weekly to rehearse in the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors center on Newby Street. They range in age from people in their 40s to 89-yearold trumpeter John Webb, according to director Herman May.  [Click here to read more]

Felix Abel had been bowling for more than 40 years when friends talked him into trying his skills in the Senior Olympics five years ago. He has medaled in the district and state divisions of the 85-89-year-old bowling division four consecutive years and is currently the state individual gold medalist. [Click here to read more]
