Brother
Bonaventure Thelen founded the first Alexian foundation in the United
States in Chicago in 1866. In 1869 he came to St. Louis and obtained
permission from Archbishop Kenrick to build a hospital. Brother
Bonaventure purchased the old Simons mansion located on five acres at
Carondelet (Broadway) and Osage Streets. The hospital admitted its
first patient on April 12, 1870. In 1997 the Alexian Brothers sold the
hospital. However, the Alexian Brothers continue their presence in St.
Louis through ministering to older adults in the metropolitan area.
