Five Core Values
Alexian Brothers

The Alexian Brothers have "Five Core Values" that direct and influence discussions and deliberations.  They are

  • "Compassion," described by the Brothers as a "concerned approach and competent care of those served."  We manifest God's presence in the world by our actions.
  • "Care of the Poor," take special efforts to serve the sick, aged, dying, and unwanted of all socioeconomic levels, with particular attention to the poor.  This is enduring, lasting legacy of the Alexian Brothers yesterday and today.
  • "Dignity" is that "each person is treated with respect because he or she is created in God's image.
  • "Partnership" recognize that their membership is small.  They welcome partners - other individuals, organizations and busineses  -  that wish to share their ministerial quest with them.  They recognize that two together can perform twice as much work as one.
  • "Holism," is an important aspect of all Alexian Brothers ministries, traditionally practice treating the whole person  -  body, mind, and spirit.  One cannot be divided from another regardless of the temptation to treat them separately.  As St. Paul says, to "...build up the body of Christ, till we become one in faith and in the knowledge of God's Son, and form that perfect person who is Christ come to full stature."  (Ephesians, 4:12)

Alexian Brothers Shield

The Alexian Brothers Shield is a modified version of the
Seal of the Congregation of Alexian Brothers.

Pelican motherThe upper half shows the pelican mother nourishing its young with her heart's blood - a symbol of the self-consuming sacrifice of Christian charity.

SpadesThe crossed spades in the lower left hand corner represents the early beginnings of the Alexian Brothers ministry in burying the dead during Europe's plague.

Raventhe raven in the lower right signifies the feeding of the destitute with the Body of Christ.

Cross

The cross projecting from the top indicates that the cross is salvation.

"The Love of Christ Propels Us"

Surrounding the Alexian Shield is a band with the inscription of the words of St. Paul "Caritas Christi Urget Nos - The Charity of Christ Compels Us." (2 Corithians 5:14)
